LUCKNOW: Accepting that the issue of cyber fraud was a pressing problem, electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday said that the government had taken serious note of the matter and through various interventions, had already managed to prevent “lakhs of cyber attacks”.

Speaking on the inaugural day of the first digital economy working group of the G20 in Lucknow, the minister said there was still a long way to go to prevent cyber attacks and economic frauds, but an important aspect of prevention of such crimes was awareness and people had to be alert to situations and ensure that their data was protected.

“The government is working on three different platforms to curb cyber fraud. Telecom is an important gateway of Digital India and we have to make arrangements to prevent fraudulent calls. A technical firewall is being created for critical infrastructure and we have to start a programme to sensitise people. Through these means, we are preventing lakhs of daily attacks,” he said. The minister said that artificial intelligence was being used to increase surveillance while the Data Protection Bill was out for consideration and would help in protection of individual data.

Praising the country’s initiative on digital economy, the minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a new model to the world. Where digital economy was restricted to a few companies in other countries, India had brought in a policy in 2016 where it introduced a PPP model to use public fund. “No monopoly is possible in such a system. Google wanted to bring in its own system but when it saw India’s UPI, it wrote to the US Federal Bank saying that a similar system should be adopted in India,” he said, adding that India had already signed MoUs with 15 countries for its UPI.

“Today UPI is transacting over USD 1.5 trillion annually and has an average settlement time of just 2 seconds. Countless transactions that are completely transparent happen in a matter of seconds. The system allows and encourages competition so if someone works hard, they too can enjoy a piece of the market,” the minister said.

The other aspect of Digital India was the CoWIN app.
