Superintelligence is coming faster than you think, ETCIO
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made one of his boldest predictions yet. As reported by Business Insider, Altman has claimed that artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence by the end of this decade. Speaking at a recent event, Altman said that the pace at which AI is developing will accelerate so fast that the world must prepare for a future where machines will outthink humans. “In many ways, GPT5 is already smarter than me, at least, I think a lot of other people too. GPT5 is capable of doing incredible things that many people find very impressive. But it’s also not able to do a lot of things that humans could do easily,” said Altman.
Altman said that he expects artificial general intelligence (AGI) — systems capable of performing tasks at or beyond human level — to emerge by 2030, and possibly as soon as 2029. “We are on track to see AI exceed human intelligence within the next five years,” he noted, underscoring both the opportunities and risks of such a breakthrough.
Balancing promise and peril
While OpenAI CEO is optimistic about AI’s potential to transform industries, he also warned of upcoming existential risks. He mentioned that if the technology is not governed properly it will lead to existential risks. Earlier, Altman also called for global regulatory frameworks to ensure AI is developed safely, echoing concerns shared by other tech leaders.
The prediction comes as AI adoption accelerates worldwide, with companies and governments investing heavily in generative AI, robotics, and autonomous systems.
