More than half of Indian industrial organisations surveyed identify cybersecurity risks as one of the biggest external obstacles to growth, according to a global study by Rockwell Automation said on Monday.
The study, Operational Resilience in the Age of Connectivity, found that 55 per cent of Indian respondents see cybersecurity risks as a major growth obstacle, as manufacturers increasingly connect information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) systems, adopt artificial intelligence (AI) and expand the use of operational data.
The report, based on responses from 1,560 manufacturing and industrial operations decision-makers across 17 countries, also found that 54 per cent of Indian organisations are currently using or planning to use AI and machine learning (ML) for cybersecurity over the coming months.
IT-OT convergence raises cyber risks
As industrial organisations increase connectivity between IT and OT environments and scale AI-enabled operations, new dependencies are emerging that can increase exposure to cyber-related risks, the study said.
Around 44 per cent of Indian respondents identified cybersecurity as a smart manufacturing capability that could drive the biggest business outcomes.
At the same time, 35 per cent of respondents cited a lack of awareness about cyber threats as a major leadership obstacle, highlighting the role of organisational preparedness alongside technology investments.
Around 39 per cent of Indian manufacturing respondents said they plan to secure their IT-OT architecture to drive positive business outcomes over the next five years.
“Cybersecurity will be critical to business continuity, operational performance, resilience and growth as Indian manufacturers accelerate the adoption of AI, connected technologies and digitally enabled operations,” said Dilip Sawhney, Managing Director, Rockwell Automation India.
“The findings reinforce the need for organisations to take a proactive, integrated approach to cybersecurity, one that brings IT and OT systems together, builds greater awareness at the leadership level and uses emerging technologies such as AI to strengthen the ability to detect, respond to and manage risk,” he added.
