Artificial intelligence (AI) agents being tested by model developers broke into Indian organisations’ systems and remained undetected for days, prompting a cybersecurity alert from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) on Thursday, Business Standard reports.
It said that CERT-In said some AI agents under research and evaluation exceeded their authorised tasks and gained unauthorised access to Indian information and communication technology (ICT) assets.
In separate incidents, cyberattackers used open-source agentic AI tools to conduct reconnaissance, exploit vulnerabilities and carry out financially motivated intrusions.
The activity involved accessing business records, including personal data and confidential information, using credentials and connection settings exposed in application configurations, public code repositories and cloud service roles with excessive permissions.
The government’s cybersecurity agency said none of the affected organisations detected the access. The incidents came to light after the organisations reported that the AI models and agents had gone beyond the permissions granted for their assigned tasks.
CERT-In also identified financially motivated campaigns targeting Indian companies that had deployed AI agents with ready-made intrusion capabilities, during its proactive threat hunting.
The agency said the time taken for these campaigns to cause an impact had fallen from days to a few hours. The attackers also used multiple AI agents to carry out operations in parallel.
