Okta has released India-specific findings from its Secure Sign-in Trends Report 2025, based on analysis of anonymised authentication activity across major customer environments. The findings indicate that multi-factor authentication (MFA) adoption in India is above 89%, compared with a global average of 70%, and that India’s MFA adoption increased by 4.1 percentage points year-over-year.
The report also notes a broader global shift toward stronger authentication approaches, with phishing-resistant, passwordless authentication adoption increasing 63% worldwide. It highlights that, globally, a significant portion of users still do not use MFA, while Indian organizations are closer to near-universal coverage.
The India findings emphasize that while MFA coverage is high, organizations are increasingly assessing the limitations of lower-assurance factors such as SMS and voice, which can be vulnerable to social engineering. The report points to methods such as WebAuthn and other phishing-resistant approaches as part of the next phase of authentication maturity, particularly for sensitive access.
