Indian Insurance regulator IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority) to insurers’ CISOs (Chief Information Security Officer) on May 15 evening, advised all regulated entities to undertake an immediate review of their cybersecurity preparedness in light of emerging frontier AI-driven cyber threats, including risks arising from advanced AI enabled cyberattacks.

“In view of the above, all Regulated Entities are advised to undertake an immediate review of their cybersecurity posture in light of emerging frontier AI-driven cyber threats,” the communication by IRDAI via email said, which was reviewed by ETBFSI.

The regulator has also asked insurers to “assess their exposure and preparedness with respect to risks arising from frontier AI systems, including advanced AI enabled cyberattacks.”

Further, insurers have been directed to furnish an Action Taken Report (ATR) to the authority by May 22, 2026, detailing preventive, detective and responsive security measures being implemented to strengthen cyber resilience against frontier AI-led threats.

The move comes amid heightened concern within India’s financial sector around the potential risks posed by highly advanced AI systems, particularly after discussions surrounding Anthropic’s internal AI model “Mythos”, which has triggered global debate over autonomous cyber capabilities and exploit-generation risks.

ndian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has also warned organisations about critical vulnerabilities across enterprise technology systems, including SAP products widely used by banks, insurers and large corporates.

CERT-In, operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, serves as India’s national cyber incident response agency and regularly issues threat advisories, vulnerability notes and mitigation guidance for critical infrastructure sectors.
