Snowflake launches AI Gateway and security capabilities for enterprise AI agents

Snowflake has introduced Cortex AI Gateway along with a set of AI security capabilities designed to help enterprises manage, secure, and govern AI agents across their environments.
The announcement addresses growing enterprise adoption of AI agents, which increasingly interact with data, applications, and enterprise systems, creating new requirements for security, identity management, governance, and cost visibility.
Cortex AI Gateway enables organizations to manage both AI agents built within Snowflake, such as Snowflake CoWork and Snowflake CoCo, and third-party AI agents developed on external platforms, including Claude Code and Cursor. The gateway provides centralized controls for agent access to AI models, enterprise applications, tools, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
The platform builds on Snowflake’s acquisition of Natoma in May 2026, incorporating enterprise MCP capabilities to support secure interoperability between AI agents. Snowflake also announced integrations with security vendors including 1Password, Aembit, Linx Security, Okta, SailPoint, and Saviynt to strengthen identity, access management, and governance for third-party AI agents.
According to the company, Cortex AI Gateway provides capabilities to:
- Centralize governance of AI agents, including authentication, permissions, and access policies across more than 100 MCP servers.
- Provide end-to-end visibility into agent activity, including accessed systems, tools, and executed actions.
- Monitor and attribute AI consumption costs across teams, workloads, and AI models while supporting spending controls.
- Route AI requests across approved models based on factors such as cost, latency, availability, and performance.
In addition to the gateway, Snowflake introduced new AI security capabilities focused on improving enterprise visibility into AI risk, establishing verified identities for AI agents, protecting sensitive data, applying context-aware access controls, and limiting agent permissions based on specific tasks. The company said these enhancements are intended to support secure deployment of AI agents across enterprise environments while enabling interoperability between first-party and third-party AI systems.
