Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive launched for cost-effective long-term backup data retention

Veeam Software has announced the general availability of Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive, a new archival-class cloud tier designed to help organisations securely retain older and infrequently accessed backup data while reducing storage costs.
The new offering is part of the Veeam Data Cloud Vault family and is designed for aged backups, large unstructured datasets and redundant, obsolete or trivial (ROT) data that does not require performance-optimised storage. Recovery-critical backups can remain on Veeam Data Cloud Vault, while older data can be moved to Vault Archive through policy-based tiering.
The company said growing data volumes, regulatory requirements and the adoption of agentic AI are increasing the need for organisations to retain data for longer periods. Keeping inactive backup data on premium storage can increase costs and create additional capacity pressure.
“Data powers organisations, and trusted AI requires trusted data,” said Rehan Jalil, President of Products and Technology at Veeam. “Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive gives customers a secure, immutable, and cost-effective way to tier aging backups, cold and ROT data off premium storage while keeping a trusted copy on storage better fit for long-term retention.”
Veeam Vault Archive provides immutable, encrypted and logically air-gapped storage, along with customer-controlled key management and data placement controls. The company said these capabilities are intended to support long-term retention, data residency requirements and cyber resilience.
According to Veeam research cited in the announcement, backup repositories are targeted in 96% of ransomware attacks, while 58% of organisations consider data residency and sovereignty the most important factor when deciding where data is stored.
The solution works with Veeam Data Platform v13.1, allowing customers to tier older backups based on policy and archive large unstructured datasets, including NAS backups, directly to Veeam Vault Archive. The platform can also scan data to help verify clean restore points before they are retained for the long term.
Veeam positions the service as an alternative to tape for long-term retention. Unlike physical media, cloud-based archiving removes the need for handling, transportation and offsite logistics while providing on-demand access to archived data.
Veeam Vault Archive also supports the company’s 3-2-1-1-0 data protection strategy by providing an immutable, logically air-gapped archive copy. The company said the service is designed to simplify data management while reducing the cost of retaining cold and inactive backup data.
The launch comes alongside Veeam Data Platform v13.1, which includes capabilities such as NAS Direct to Archive and expanded threat detection for NAS and cloud workloads. Together, the updates are aimed at helping organisations validate backup data before moving it into long-term archive storage and maintain a recoverable copy for future recovery requirements.
